Boat Construction Rules

  • Boats must be made primarily from corrugated cardboard.

  • The only materials permitted are:

    • Cardboard

    • Duct tape

    • Packing tape

    • Masking tape

    • Water-based paint or markers for decoration

  • No wood, plastic, foam, fiberglass, metal, PVC, inflatables, or pre-made boat parts may be used as structural components.

  • Boats may be any size, provided they fit safely in the pool and can be carried by their crew.

  • Paddles may be made from cardboard or commercially made kayak/canoe paddles.

  • Paint & Decorations: Boats may be decorated with water-based latex or acrylic paint, markers, and tape. All paint must be completely dry before race day. Oil-based paints, epoxy coatings, marine paints, rubberized coatings (such as Flex Seal), and other solvent-based finishes are not permitted.

  • No loose glitter, confetti, beads, or decorations that could detach in the pool. All decorations must be securely attached to the boat.

Race Rules

  • The objective is to paddle to the finish line while staying afloat.

  • If your boat sinks, continue to the finish by swimming with your boat if you wish—sinking is part of the fun!

  • Participants must follow all instructions from event volunteers and lifeguards.
